Family on the beach at sunset

Why We Travel as a Family

Why take the chaos of bedtime, the tantrums at dinner, the crying and constant complaining on the road? Parenting is hard enough at home in your safe zone so why would you ever want to leave? Why do we travel as a family? There are countless reasons, follow along and I’ll share a few of my favorites.

Parenthood-It Sucks Till It’s Worth It

As we have become seasoned parents we have learned one phrase that rings true every day:  “It Sucks, It Sucks, It Sucks, and then for a brief moment it’s all worth it.”  We travel because those brief moments come by the masses as we explore the world together and they make it all worth it

Sometimes those moments are for the kids and sometimes they are for ourselves.

One of the best things about being a parent is you get to experience everything with your child for the first time.

I can vividly remember the first time we took our oldest to the beach. We were looking forward to seeing her reaction as we hustled down the boardwalk and hit the warm sand. I was beyond excited.

I remember putting her feet in the wet sand and the disgusting look that instantly covered her face. She broke out in tears and there was no consoling her. She hated it! My husband and I laughed, as it was not the reaction we wanted or expected, but it was genuine and real and it bonded us as a family.

What’s the point of taking your kids on vacation?

As great as this sounds traveling with kids takes more patience than I ever thought I had in me. So you may be saying to yourself, what’s the point? Can’t we make memories together at home?

The point is…building bonds together by stepping out of our comfortable homes and experiencing new things together as a family.

The point is…seeing your children’s eyes light up at something completely unexpected.

The point is…unplugging from daily life and routine and actually connecting with each other.

The point is…slowing down enough to notice your children again.

The point is...laughing together.

The point is…making time for the moments that make it all worth it.

The biggest reason I take my kids on trips

The big point..as my children have grown, I have learned that childhood has seasons. The baby season passes is a blink of an eye. The toddler season which seems to never end and fly by all at the same time. The sweet spot of innocent childhood when they are becoming independent and your best friend. Then the teen years hit hard as your baby becomes their own very opinionated person who no longer wants anything to do with you.

My kids are growing faster than I can keep up. The biggest reason I travel is to savor each season with my child. To experience their reactions for the first time. When I am away from my day to day tasks, I can catch the little memories and hold onto them. To make the seasons last a little longer.

Even if you are going to the same place year after year, it will be a different experience each time. You don’t have to do big trips to make memories! A great example of how each time is so different is when we have gone to Disney World.

Every time we have been as a family, it is completely different. The first time it was all about the rides in Fantasy Land and we didn’t even look towards the rest of the park.

But as our kids have grown, so have our experiences. Now our 10-year-old pulls us to the roller coasters, our 6-year-old pines to see the princesses, and the 2-year-old makes sure we don’t miss a single thing in Fantasy Land.

So take your kids on that trip you’ve been thinking about. Embrace every season of childhood because tomorrow your baby will be another day older. Disconnect from life and see the world through the eyes of your kids.
