Anyone who knows me, knows I do not like birds. For some reason I have an unexplainable fear of birds. But after moving to Kuala Lumpur, I was constantly hearing how great the bird park in Kuala Lumpur is. So I mustered the courage and took the kids to the Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur.
I will leave a more detailed review later, but if you’re already tired of reading, let me tell you quickly that this is definitely worth your time! This is coming from a person who does not like person, so trust me, you will love it.

How to get to Bird Park KL
The Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur is located in the center of town. Driving in Malaysia can be tricky so don’t be disappointed if you take a couple wrong turns, even after living here for 2 years, I still take wrong turns every day.
You can easily find the Bird Park KL on Google Maps or whatever map you choose. But don’t be fooled, even Google maps is difficult to navigate here. So here are a few tips on getting to the bird park in KL:
- It is located in the center of the Perdana Botanical Gardens
- Follow your GPS exactly, if it says 2nd left, you take the 2nd road.
- Once you are in the botanical gardens, you can follow signs to the Bird Park.
- If you miss a turn, don’t worry your GPS will reroute you.
- There is parking in front of the ticket office.
There is a parking lot in front of the ticket office, but parking is limited so make sure to get there when they first open so you can find an easy spot. Parking is free.
Grab Car
If you do not have a car in Kuala Lumpur or you do not want to drive, it is very easy to get a Grab Car in Malaysia. Grab Car works just like Uber, it is a free app that you can download on your phone.
The best part about Grab Car is that it is a lot cheaper than Uber. It will most likely only cost a couple of dollars to get to the Bird Park from anywhere in KL. Grab Car will easily be able to drop you off and pick you up from the Bird Park.
KL Bird Park Hours
The KL Bird Park is open seven days a week from 9:00am to 6:00pm. You will need at least 2 hours to tour the park so make sure to arrive before 4:00pm.

Tips for Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur
- Wear bug protection, the mosquitos are horrible! I like to use these patches and or bracelets that are sold on Amazon. I love these because they work really well but you don’t have to put anything on your skin.
- Take a bottle of drinking water. The water from the sink is not drinkable anywhere in Malaysia. Or your Lifestraw water bottle, this water bottle will filter water from any source and make it drinkable for you. There are places to buy water in the park, but bringing your own will save you money.
- Wear a hat. As you wander through the bird park in Kuala Lumpur, you will be grateful if you have a hat on. There are many places that are very wooded and you never know what birds may be above you.
- Arrive when they open. This will help you avoid crowds and heat. The earlier the better.
Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur Exhibits
This vast park has a lot to see! But don’t be overwhelmed, you can easily see the whole park in just a few hours. So what are the things you should do and what should you skip?
Where to start
As you enter the park, you will go through lots of chains that help to keep the birds in the park. As soon as you clear the chains, you will start to see the free-roaming birds. This is where my anxiety kicked in 🙂 But don’t worry you are safe.
I would suggest turning left as you go down the hill. Most of the fun exhibits are to the left of the entrance. My kids loved wandering down the path and watching the birds walk freely around them.
The park naturally flows as you follow the path down the hill and stay to the left. It is a big circle so you don’t worry, you won’t miss a thing if you wander off the path a little bit.
What not to miss at the KL Bird Park
The KL Bird Park is huge and it is easy to feel very overwhelmed. It is fun to wander through the open air park and see all the free flight birds. But there are a few attractions that are a must see while you are in the park. I’ll highlight a few of my favorites.
Going under the waterfall
Don’t miss walking under the man made waterfall. It is a little bit of a walk back to the waterfall. But it is worth it. I love that you can walk under the waterfall. It’s such a great view of the man made pond and you get up close and personal with lots of peacocks.
Follow the path down and around the pond for my next favorite attraction. If you have little kids with you, there is a great playground at the bottom of the hill, overlooking the pond.
BEWARE the mosquitos are really bad at this playground. Make sure to wear mosquito protection.
Feeding Ostriches
After you finish at the playground, you will come upon my favorite thing to do at the park. This sounds a little strange but trust me, it is an absolute blast.
There are baskets full of lettuce laying on a counter for you to freely feed the ostriches. The ostriches are located behind a cage so you are perfectly safe.
You won’t have to call the ostriches over, they will come running. I honestly never even thought of feeding ostriches but it is so funny! Ostriches are the funniest animals. They stick their heads through the holes of the cage and are dying for more treats. Don’t skip this part, it’s the best.
I also love this area because there are a ton of monkeys. Be careful around the monkeys, they are super cute and fun to watch but they are not friendly. They will steal anything from you that they think could be food.

Other exhibits at the KL Bird Park
There are lots of other exhibits at the KL Bird Park, these above are just a few of my favorites.
Hand-feeding birds
My kids loved this exhibit! In this exhibit, you enter a free flight area and birds are flying free all around you. You can purchase some bird food in a small cup. The birds will flock around you. My kids were laughing so hard, mostly because I was almost in tears. Birds flying around my head is my worst nightmare 🙂
Walking Through The Open Fly Area
If you want to see a lot of unique birds, take a walk through the open fly area. This path winds around the other side of the park. You can wander through the jungle and see many unique bids. You’ll also find a lot of monkeys on this path!
Restaurant at the KL Bird Park
The restaurant at the KL bird park does not live up to everything else in the park. It is located right in the middle of the park, you will see a large staircase that leads up to it from the park.
I would not recommend eating at the restaurant at the KL Bird Park. I would highly recommend discovering other local restaurants in KLCC or at the Megamall. If you are looking for Malaysian food, I would recommend trying Madame Kwans.
Madame Kwans is a local restaurant chain. After living a few years in Malaysia, we have learned that this is the cleanest place to try local food. The most infamous dish is Nasi Lemak, give it a try. They also have a great sweet and sour chicken for the kids.

Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur review
My overall review of the bird park in Kuala Lumpur is that this park is a must-see while you are in Kuala Lumpur. After living in Kuala Lumpur for 2 years, I have done a lot of touring this city and it’s safe to say that the bird park is one of the best things to see.
